  3.      How was the value of 470,000 ohms chosen?  Experimenta-
  4.      tion  with  different  resistor  values showed that for
  5.      values both above and below  470,000  ohms,  the  R7000
  6.      scan  rate  decreases.   Not  having  the R7000 Service
  7.      Manual, I assume this can be explained by the  firmware
  8.      within the microprocessor associated with the scan rate
  9.      input port.2

  11.      Adding the 470,000 ohm resistor in parallel  with  R18,
  12.      rather than just replacing R18, has a few advantages:
  13.  
  14.        1.  The modification is easily undone, returning  the
  15.            radio to stock condition.
  16.  
  17.        2.  The LOGIC UNIT board does not have to be removed,
  18.            as  would  be the case if R18 was unsoldered from
  19.            the foil side.

  22.                      Making the Modification

  24.      Accessing this circuit  board  is  not  difficult,  and
  25.      involves  the  same  steps  used  when  installing  the
  26.      optional Remote Controller or Speech units.

  28.      Use a towel to cover your work area to avoid scratching
  29.      the  R7000 cabinet.  Unplug the R7000 from the AC line,
  30.      and turn the radio  upside  down.   Remove  the  bottom
  31.      cover by removing the 12 screws holding it in place.

  33.      Remove the 4 screws holding what ICOM terms the "parti-
  34.      tion  panel".  Pictures on pages 32 and 34 of the R7000
  35.      Instruction Manual show  the  partition  panel.   After
  36.      removing  this  panel,  the component side of the LOGIC
  37.      UNIT circuit board is accessible.

  39.  2. Perhaps the firmware polls the scan rate input port
  40.     infrequently.  Another possibility is that the scanning
  41.     pulses interrupt the processor, and the interrupt
  42.     firmware is limited in its ability to process frequent
  43.     interrupts.

  45.      Locate R18, a 270,000 ohm 1/8 watt resistor, near  con-
  46.      nector J5.  You may wish to remove plug P5 from J5 tem-
  47.      porarily if it gets in your way.   Carefully  solder  a
  48.      470,000  ohm  resistor  in parallel with R18.  I used a
  49.      1/4 watt resistor as it was the smallest on hand.

  51.      Reassemble the  radio,  connect  it  to  AC  power  and
  52.      antenna, and enjoy.

  54.      In the modified R7000, the scan and  search  rates  are
  55.      still  adjustable  using  the SCAN SPEED control.  With
  56.      the control turned fully clockwise (maximum speed), the
  57.      modified  R7000  scans  at about 13 channels/second and
  58.      won't miss weak signals.
